Title of the paper: Political Literary WorksHomage to Catalonia, Animal Farm & 1984

Author or topic: George Orwell

Abstract:

Orwell´s literary works had mostly been concerned with politics. He considered himself to be a Socialist, however, many of his contemporaries didn´t agree with that definition since his political views on Socialism differed greatly from those of his Left-wing fellowmen.

In order to understand his particular and dissilussioned view on Socialism, Orwell´s book  Homage to Catalonia has been taken as a guide to analyze his two following fiction novels: Animal Farm, and 1984; where Orwell criticizes the dangers of absolute power and the consequences of a bad organized population who can´t control the corruption of their leaders.

Orwell longed for a better and more egalitarian society. He saw in the Spanish Civil War an opportunity to fight for what he believed to be a Revolution to obtain this longed for rights. However, he was disappointed by its collapse, and suffered the flaws and abuses that disintegrated this idea. This is by and large, the main theme of Homage to Catalonia, which is further discussed in the introduction to this Second Paper.

As a consequence of his involvement in the Spanish Civil War, he became more adamant about his political thought and transformed it in his two following novels. In Animal Farm, Orwell depicts the crumbling down of a Revolution, and in 1984, he warns us about the tyrannical systems and abuses of power, satirizing current events of the time. All three books have been put together in this essay to emphasize how Orwell´s biography can help us to appreciate the messages in these two fiction books.

Orwell wrote also essays on politics, but those didn´t achieve the success of his fiction work or his biographical account in Barcelona. In conclusion, his literary works have attained universal recognition not only for their political message, but rather for a matter of how he expressed his thoughts.
